Yonex Canadian National Championships in Winnipeg

Badminton Canada has released the seeds and draws for this week’s Yonex Canadian National Championships in Winnipeg starting January 28th.

In Men’s Singles, local hero and home town, favorite David Snyder takes the top seed over the RA Badminton Club’s Stephan Wojcikiewicz, winner of the last Yonex Senior Elite Series event in Moncton and ranked 59th in the world. In the three/four seeding positions are Alex Pang of British Columbia and the RA’s Joseph Rogers. These two have been battling it out all season in the Yonex Senior Elite Series events with Pang getting the better of Rogers in the last two matches. One of Ontario’s top junior players Nyl Yakura has been given one of the five through eight seeds. Joining Yakura will be Manuel Thomas and Philippe Gaumond of Quebec and Martin Giuffre of Alberta.

The top seed in Women’s Singles goes to Toronto’s Michelle Li, a double gold medalist in Moncton. Anna Rice (British Columbia), Canadian Olympic team member in Beijing and 2008 Canadian Champion takes the number slot and Jocelyn Ko (Ontario) and former RA Badminton Club member Valerie St-Jacques (Quebec) are seeded three/four. Rounding out the top seeds in the five through eight slots are Charmaine Reid (Ontario), Phyllis Chan (British Columbia), Alex Bruce (Ontario) and Florence Lavoie (Quebec).

The seeding for Men’s Doubles has Alvin Lau (British Columbia) and Jonathan Vandervet (Alberta) on top with Adrian Liu (British Columbia) and Toby Ng (Alberta) ranked second. In the three/four positions are Kevin Li (Ontario) and his partner Tommy Mckee of the RA as well as Quebec players Maxime Belanger and Francois Bourret.

Michelle Li takes her second top seed with partner Alex Bruce in Women’s Doubles. Valerie St-Jacques and Alberta’s Milaine Cloutier are the second seeds. Stephanie Ko (British Columbia) and Florence Lavoie (Quebec) will be joined by British Columbia’s Lydia Jiang and Melody Liang as the three/four seeds.

In Mixed Doubles Alberta’s Toby Ng and Grace Gao, return from Asia where they have been competing in the Badminton World Federation Super Series, as the top seed. The second seed is Derrick Ng and partner Melody Liang from British Columbia. Albert’s Jonathan Vandervet and Milaine Cloutier and Alvin Lau and Fiona Mckee (British Columbia and Ontario respectively) round out the remaining seeded positions in the draw.
