Frank Melvin was the president of the J.S Woodsworth-Merivale badminton club in the 70s. He has joined the RA badminton club after his club was closed in the late 80s. Very often he would challenge players half of his age for singles games. He has not only playing at the club regularly, but also participating the badminton tournaments all over the world and received countless medals. For example, he went to the Canadian Senior and Master Championship in May 2012, and won the 80+ Men's Singles silver medal... What he is pround of the most is not about how many medals he had earned but how he competed in the younger age groups and physically survived the competetive tournaments. He has turned 90 in July 3, 2015 that makes him the oldest player still running on the badminton court in our district. The coordinator of the Ontario Senior Games Association Ottawa West district, Roger Huestis has organized a party for him. Here was how the party went:

Everyone watched the CTV interview and amazed how this 90 years old tumbled on the badminton court and bounce back. Frank appreciated The congratulation letter from the president of Badminton Ontario, Ian Moss and said he will frame it up on his wall. Frank's speech was short ad sweet. He thanked Roger for organizing the party, he thanked the whole group for playing with him... then he ended it with "see you all in the court and I will weep your butt!". OMG! he still has the same aggressiveness as 40 years ago! Maybe that is why he is still going strong at his 90s. He will be the role model for us all. We want to live an active life like Frank and still play challeging badminton games pass our 90s... |
Happy 90th Birthday Frank! |
