2011 Yonex Junior and U23 National Championships

May 2-7, 2011

Vancouver

The RA Badminton Club brought home bronze medals in five events, lead by Sergiy Shatenko with medals in both Under 19 Boys Singles and Under 19 Boys Doubles teaming with club mate Andrew D’Souza. Qufei Chen won another bronze medal in Under 19 Girls Singles. Joseph Rogers, brought home a bronze medal in Under 23 Men’s Singles. A total of ten RA members travelled to Richmond, British Columbia to compete at the Richmond Oval, site of this year’s competition.

Singles

Kevin Cao lost first round BS U19 to Michael Coates of New Brunswick 21-16, 16-21, 13-21.

Alex Chao lost his first round Boys Singles match against John Chernoff of Alberta 21-11, 21-17. In Consolation play Alex had a walkover against Huron Cheung of BC before losing 21-15, 21-19 to Haijun Liu of BC.

Qufei Chen (seeded ¾) defeated Margaret Cameron of BC 21-6, 21-3 in second round GS U19 after receiving a first round bye. In the third round Qufei defeated Kristy Beettam of Manitoba 21-13, 21-15 to advance to the quarter-finals. In the quarter final Qufei defeated 5/8 seed Kacey Tung of Alberta 21-14, 21-7. In the semi-final against top seed Christin Tsai of BC, Qufei lost 21-9, 21-8. Christin then defeated Surabhi Kadam of Ontario 21-7, 21-17.

Andrew D’Souza the top seed defeated Matthew Chan of Alberta in BS U19 second round action 21-10, 16-21, 21-12 after receiving a first round bye. Andrew was then upset by Jason Sun of BC 19-21, 21-6, 18-21and was eliminated from further competition.

Emile Fleury-Larocque defeated Emily Chung of BC 21-9, 21-14 in second round GS U19 after receiving a first round bye but was defeated by Surabhi Kadam of Ontario 21-9, 21-16 in the third round.

Corey Hum defeated Qualifier Andrew Chen of BC 21-14, 21-9 in first round BS U19 play. Corey then defeated Sam Dunner seeded ¾ also of BC 21-18, 21-17. On Wednesday, Corey Ian Laidlaw of Manitoba and defeated him 14-21, 21-18, 21-15 to advance to the quarter finals. Alexis Gohier-Drolet of Quebec defeated Corey 18-21, 21-13, 21-13 to advance to the semi final.

Joseph Rogers seeded second in Men’s Singles U23 defeated Bobby Lee of BC 21-10, 21-6 in second round play after receiving a first round bye. In the third round Joseph defeated Jeremy Cote of BC 21-18, 21-13 to advance to the quarter finals. Joseph then defeated Joseph Donaldson of Alberta 21-17, 21-11 to advance to the semi final against Martin Giuffre also of Alberta where he lost 21-17, 14-21, 21-14.

Sergiy Shatenko seeded 5/8 defeated Nathan Choi of BC in BS U19 second round play 18-21, 21-17, 23-21 after receiving a first round bye. In third round action Sergiy defeated Andy Ko of Alberta 21-18, 23-21 to advance to the quarter finals. Sergiy then defeated the second seed Clinton Wong of BC 21-10, 8-21, 21-13. Sergiy lost to Nyl Yakura, seeded ¾ of Ontario 21-7, 21-17. Nyl defeated Jason Sun in the final 21-12, 21-18.

Kartikay Tyagi seeded 5/8 defeated Shawn Haung Gratton of Quebec 21-11, 21-14 in BS U16 play after receiving a first round bye. In third round play Kartikay defeated Ryan Lam of Alberta 21-13, 20-22, 21-16 to advance to the quarter finals. Duncan Yao of BC then defeated Kartikay 26-24, 21-15 to advance to the semi-final.

Liam Woodside defeated qualifier Bradley Low of BC 21-17, 21-17 in BS U19 first round action but then lost to Felix Deblois-Beaucage of Quebec 21-11, 21-12.

Doubles

Kevin Cao and Liam Woodside won their opening round U19 Boys Doubles match against David Gagne and Philippe Murray of Quebec 21-7, 21-13 before losing to Sam Dunner and Matt Downton of BC 21-15, 21-14

Qufei Chen and Emile Fleury-Larocque defeated Pascale Jomphe and Mal-Ahn Porlier of Quebec 21-6, 21-6 in first round Girls Double U19 action. They then defeated Kristy Beettam and Cynthia Charlton of Manitoba 18-21, 21-4, 21-9 to advance to the quarter finals. Emile and Qufei lost 11-21, 21-16, 13-21 to second seeds Jody Chan and Stephanie Yeung of Ontario.

Andrew D’Souza and Sergiy Shatenko won their first round Boys Doubles U19 against Zachary Peltz and James Thorpe of Manitoba 21-14, 21-6 and then defeated the 5/8 seeds of Andy Ko and Henry Wiebe of Alberta 18-20, 21-10, 22-20 to advance to the quarter finals. Andrew and Sergei defeated Alexis Gohier-Drolet and Maxime Marin of Quebec 21-9, 21-19 to advance to the semi-final against 5/8 seeds Michael Diamond and Wesley Marr of Ontario. In the semi-final Andrew and Sergiy lost 24-22, 21-14 to Diamond and Marr who then defeated 21-16, 21-16 Andrew Lau and Andrew Wilkenson of Ontario to take the gold medal.

Corey Hum and Adam Chan of Ontario defeated Andrew Chen and Benjamin Mastar of BC 21-18, 21-13 to advance to the main round of BD U19 on Monday. Unfortunately they were defeated by Alexis Gohier-Drolet and Maxime Marin of Quebec 17-21, 23-21, 21-13. Gohier-Drolet and Marin then defeated the number two seeds, Joshua Hurlburt-Yu and Jackie Yeung of Ontario 18-21, 21-11, 21-19.

Kartikay Tyagi and Alex Chao seeded 5/8 in Boys Doubles U16 defeated qualifiers Jack Tam and Colin Yan of BC 21-19, 21-14 before dropping a 17-21, 10-21 match to Jerry Chen and Aaron Lee of BC.

Mixed Doubles

Kevin Cao and Emile Fleury-Larocque lost their first round U19 XD match to Aaron Lam and Carrie Law of Ontario 13-21, 21-13, 19-21.

Sergiy Shatenko and Qufei Chen (seeded 5/8) received a first round bye in U19 Mixed Doubles. In the second round they defeated Sean Lamb of Saskatchewan and Dylan Kerdman of Ontario 21-10, 21-15. They then defeated Maxime Marin and Isabelle Vezina of Quebec 21-10, 20-22, 21-18 to advance to the quarter finals. Top seeds Nyl Yakura (Ontario) and Christin Tsai (BC) defeated Sergiy and Qufei 18-21, 21-13, 21-9.
